How do you speak about yesterday?
For many everyday accounts of completed events, German uses the Perfekt: a present-tense form of haben or sein and a past participle. In a simple main clause, the auxiliary takes the second position and the participle comes at the end. Practise complete messages, not participles in isolation.
Gestern habe ich meine Schwester besucht.
Am Abend bin ich nach Hause gefahren.
Choose the auxiliary with the meaning
Many verbs use haben. Some intransitive verbs of a change of place or state use sein; bleiben also uses sein. Movement alone is not a complete rule: compare Ich bin nach Bonn gefahren with Ich habe das Auto gefahren. Learn the auxiliary alongside the actual use of the verb. Regional usage can differ for some verbs.
A weekend story: two verb slots
Original fictional weekend story
In this intransitive travel example, fahren uses sein: ich bin … gefahren.
Besuchen uses haben here. The participle besucht has no added ge- before the inseparable prefix be-.
Kochen uses haben in this example: ich habe … gekocht.
Complete the sentence with the Perfekt of besuchen.
Am Sonntag ___ ich Freunde ___.
Reveal the answer
Am Sonntag habe ich Freunde besucht.
Use habe for ich and besucht as the participle; keep the auxiliary in position 2.
