B2 German discussion practice: opinions, examples and counterarguments

Practise B2 German discussions with three original topics, contrasting positions and constructive responses. Build interaction through questions, objections and compromises.

Published 7 October 2026 · Lingeva

What makes a discussion useful at B2?

State a position, explain a reason, respond to the other person and move the discussion forward. A longer monologue does not automatically show interaction. The CEFR describes abilities rather than requiring one fixed script. The tasks here are original practice, not official exam questions or a scoring rubric.

Respond to a counterargument without losing your point

Original fictional discussion: should a library open on Sundays?

Position · Speaker A
Ich finde, dass die Bibliothek sonntags öffnen sollte.

Ich finde, dass introduces the position; sollte expresses a proposed change.

Reason · Speaker A
Viele Berufstätige haben nur am Wochenende Zeit.

This is the fictional speaker’s supporting reason, not a verified demographic claim.

Counterpoint · Speaker B
Das würde aber zusätzliche Personalkosten verursachen.

Aber marks the contrasting concern; würde … verursachen presents a possible consequence.

Acknowledgment + limited trial proposal · Speaker A
Das stimmt. Man könnte zunächst nur an einem Sonntag im Monat öffnen.

The speaker acknowledges the cost concern and limits the proposed change instead of repeating the original position.

Try it yourself

Which reply both acknowledges the cost concern and offers a concrete alternative?

A. Nein, das sehe ich nicht so.

B. Das stimmt. Man könnte zunächst nur an einem Sonntag im Monat öffnen.

Reveal the answer

B

B performs both requested functions. A is grammatical but only expresses disagreement; it neither acknowledges the concern nor gives an alternative.

A constructive reply addresses the concern and adds a workable proposal. This model demonstrates one discussion strategy; it is not an official exam answer or score.

Three topics and contrasting views

Should a library open on Sundays?

These are fictional viewpoints for practice, not established facts. Choose a position or create your own.

Position A: Menschen mit wenig Freizeit könnten die Bibliothek besser nutzen.
Position B: Zusätzliche Öffnungszeiten brauchen Personal und Geld.
Möglicher Kompromiss: Man könnte zunächst einen Sonntag im Monat ausprobieren.

Explain your choice, ask one question and respond to the objection.

Should meetings sometimes be online?

These are fictional viewpoints for practice, not established facts. Choose a position or create your own.

Position A: Online-Treffen können lange Anfahrtswege vermeiden.
Position B: Bei schwierigen Themen fehlt mir manchmal der direkte Austausch.
Möglicher Kompromiss: Kurze Abstimmungen könnten online stattfinden; längere Workshops vor Ort.

Explain your choice, ask one question and respond to the objection.

Should a class start later?

These are fictional viewpoints for practice, not established facts. Choose a position or create your own.

Position A: Ein späterer Beginn wäre für Berufstätige praktischer.
Position B: Wer lange nach Hause fährt, wäre dann sehr spät zu Hause.
Möglicher Kompromiss: Wir könnten die Teilnehmenden nach zwei konkreten Uhrzeiten fragen.

Explain your choice, ask one question and respond to the objection.

Respond constructively

Offer a compromiseVielleicht könnten wir zunächst … ausprobieren.

Follow the other person’s answer

  • If they agree, ask which first step they prefer.
  • If they object, summarize the concern before offering an alternative.
  • If you do not understand, ask for a concrete example.
Answers and explanation

Du meinst also, dass die Kosten das größte Problem sind. Habe ich dich richtig verstanden? Vielleicht könnten wir zunächst nur einen Termin anbieten.

A practical self-check

  • Did I make my position and reason clear?
  • Did I refer to the actual objection?
  • Did I invite the other person to contribute?
  • Could I reformulate when a word was missing?

Record a short exchange with a partner who agrees to it, or take both roles yourself. Repeat with a changed constraint. Use the official exam model for the exact format you are preparing for.
