Which B2 exam should you choose?

Start with the organisation that needs your certificate: ask which exact qualification it accepts and whether there is a deadline. Then compare the task formats, available dates and your preparation needs. Neither exam is universally easier for every learner. This guide compares Goethe-Zertifikat B2 with general telc Deutsch B2, not telc Deutsch B2 Beruf or C1 Hochschule.

Does a shorter writing section prove an exam is easier?

Compare the actual preparation tasks

Goethe B2 has four modules that can be taken separately or together. Its writing module includes a forum contribution and a formal professional message. General telc B2 combines reading with a separate language-elements section in one timed block. Use each provider’s official sample to inspect the exact instructions and assessment criteria rather than applying one provider’s checklist to the other.

Try a preparation comparison

  • Open an official sample from each provider and read its instructions.
  • Attempt one writing task from each, using its own time and task requirements.
  • Check whether you answered every requested point before checking individual grammar errors.
  • Rehearse the speaking task with a partner and a follow-up you did not prepare in advance.

A shorter section is not an easier exam

Task complexity, assessment and your skills matter alongside time. A fluent conversation does not automatically complete a formal writing task, and accurate grammar does not replace an explanation of your position. Choose from concrete attempts rather than a universal “easiest B2” ranking.

Format details were checked against official pages on 7 October 2026. The selected task times do not represent the entire visit to a test centre.
